Butler's Black basketball players navigate a white campus: 'You do stick out.'

INDIANAPOLIS – Aaron Thompson comes from Prince George’s County in Maryland where 62% of schoolchildren are Black and 87% non-white. Through sixth grade, he remembers having one or two white students in classes.

When he enrolled at Paul VI Catholic High School in Fairfax, Virginia, and later at Butler University, it was the opposite: he was the only black student in class, or perhaps one of two.

“You do stick out. You do feel like an outcast at times in a social setting,” Thompson said.

He is heading into his senior season as the point guard who could become Butler’s all-time leader in assists.
