Butler freshman Scooby Johnson out for season with knee injury

INDIANAPOLIS – Scooby Johnson, one of the prized freshmen in the highest-rated recruiting class in Butler history, has been sidelined for the 2020-21 basketball season.

The university announced Monday that Johnson will have surgery this week on his left knee after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in a recent workout.

The 6-6 Johnson was expected to contend for a spot in the starting lineup after the Bulldogs lost wings Sean McDermott and Jordan Tucker.

Johnson, of Benton Harbor, Mich., was his state’s Mr. Basketball. He earned All-America honorable mention (top 50 players) from MaxPreps. He averaged 25 points, 11 rebounds and 6 assists per game for Benton Harbor (20-2).
