Butler family loses popular fan Durwin Griggs to COVID-19

INDIANAPOLIS – Durwin Griggs was devoted to the Dawgs before it was trendy.

In the late 1980s, Butler had 15 paying season ticket-holders for basketball. He was one of them.

He was there for the depths of the 6-20 season in 1988-89, and for the heights of NCAA championship games in 2010 and 2011. He attended games at Hinkle Fieldhouse during the recent pandemic season and was an usher at Clowes Memorial Hall.

“He loved Butler. He loved everything about it,” said Brandon Cooper, who was Griggs’ companion of 17 years.

After a two-month struggle with COVID-19, Griggs died March 3.
