Authors show how Butler basketball and Shane Battier redefined leadership

Professors talk about new book, ‘Catalyst Effect’ Indianapolis Star

INDIANAPOLIS – Brad Stevens did not write the book on the Butler Way. Two Butler University business professors did.

That is only slight exaggeration. Authors for “The Catalyst Effect,” a book released last year, researched an unconventional approach to leadership and found that what worked on the basketball court for the Bulldogs works in business, the arts and elsewhere.

“If we can make a little dent in the universe, a little dent in leadership theory, it’s around the idea that you can lead from the chair you’re in,” said Jerry Toomer, an adjunct professor who held senior positions for 25 years with Dow Chemical Company and Dow Agro-Sciences.
