Ilkay Gundogan emerges as a shock striker option for Pep Guardiola as the Manchester City boss reveals Sergio Aguero will have surgery on his injured knee on Thursday

Pep Guardiola has offered up Ilkay Gundogan as a surprise short-term replacement for Sergio Aguero.

Aguero has undergone surgery on a lateral meniscus injury in his left knee in Barcelona and is set for up to seven weeks on the sidelines.

A picture the Argentine posted on Twitter on Wednesday afternoon showed him in his hospital bed with the caption: 'Everything went well, and I'll soon begin recovery. A big thanks to Dr Cugat and his team – and to all of you for your support.'
