What is “force majeure” and what does it mean to UB

Disclaimer: I’m not a lawyer, not even close....

So the UB vs Ohio State game is cancelled and while I don’t have the contract for this game, I do have a lot of past contracts between UB and Big Ten schools and they all include two things.

One, that if either party calls off the game they are liable for some or all of the revenue lost by the other party

Two, an exception to one know as “force majeure

Force majeure is a common clause in contracts that essentially frees both parties from liability or obligation when an extraordinary event or circumstance beyond the control of the parties, such as a war, strike, riot, crime, epidemic or an event described by the legal term act of God, prevents one or both parties from fulfilling their obligations under the contract.
