On Feb. 22,1980, the United States men's Olympic hockey team shocked the international juggernaut Soviet Union and the rest of the world with a 4-3 win in the medal round. Two days later, the stars and stripes took home the gold. But before they were gold medalists, or even Team USA, they were college student-athletes. Some even donned school colors as recent as months before coach Herb Brooks held Olympic tryouts in the summer of 1979.
