Joey Akpunonu will be making another trip down I-75 to take the next step of his soccer career.
The Bowling Green State University standout defender and St. John’s Jesuit graduate was selected by FC Cincinnati with the 22nd overall pick in the 2023 MLS SuperDraft on Wednesday.
Akpunonu became the fifth BGSU player to be chosen in the MLS draft and the first Falcon to be selected in the first round.
Akpunonu was a first-team Mid-American Conference selection during the 2022 season. He tallied six goals and played every second of his 16 starts for the Falcons (6-5-5).
