Jermain Defoe has not given up on earning a place in England's World Cup squad after boss Gareth Southgate told him: 'The door is always open'

Gareth Southgate has challenged Jermain Defoe to win a place in his World Cup squad and the Bournemouth striker insists he can be England's supersub in Russia.

The 35-year-old defied medics to return from a broken ankle at the weekend, just eight weeks after being told he could face three months on the sidelines.

Defoe was recalled to the England set-up by Southgate last season after a three-year absence but has not appeared since the 2-2 draw against Scotland in June.
