If Stan was still The Man he used to be he would pop into the betting shop on the corner on Saturday afternoon before bidding his last farewell to Queens Park Rangers.
That was the way of it on those halcyon match days when one of football's great entertainers spirited this homely club to within 15 minutes of winning what we now call the Premier League title.
We who merely came to marvel at his magic would bump into him coming out of the bookies less than ten minutes before kick off.
