What’s next for Red Sox after team confirms worst Marcelo Mayer injury fears

The Boston Red Sox will be without star rookie Marcelo Mayer for the rest of the 2025 season. The Red Sox revealed on Sunday that Mayer will undergo season-ending wrist surgery. The recovery time for this injury is expected to be around three months, and Boston hopes to have Mayer back on the field when the team reports to spring training in 2026.

This is an unfortunate end to what was an up-and-down rookie season for Mayer. The former first-round draft pick came up with high expectations, and while he showed some promise, it's safe to say that his first crack in the big leagues was somewhat of a disappointment.
