Terry Francona hails David Ortiz as a 'face of baseball'

CLEVELAND -- It was quite possibly the most awkward moment of David Ortiz's storied career. And Terry Francona made it happen.

Ortiz was off to a painfully slow start in 2010, batting .160 with one home run and a .556 OPS through the Boston Red Sox's first 19 games. In particular, he was having a miserable time against left-handed pitchers. And so, with Blue Jays lefty reliever Scott Downs on the mound in the eighth inning April 27 in Toronto, Ortiz walked to the plate only to be called back by Francona in favor of pinch-hitter Mike Lowell.
