Surgery possible for Red Sox starter Steven Wright

Steven Wright’s been dealing with occasional left knee soreness since spring training. Now that the injury is severe enough to put him on the disabled list, the Red Sox knuckleballer is considering surgery.

“From my understanding, there’s probably options (for different types of) surgery,” manager John Farrell said. “So you may be looking at different recovery rates or timelines for that. So that’s why there’s a lot being worked through right now.”

To this point, the Red Sox have described Wright’s injury as a left knee sprain, and he went for a second opinion this week. Farrell said the knee was an off-and-on problem in spring training, and it intensified over the weekend after his start against the Cubs.
