Edward Mujica began the season as the Red Sox' closer, filling in while Koji Uehara recovered from a hamstring injury.
Today, Mujica is off the roster.
The Sox will desginate Mujica for assignment, a major-league source confirmed, giving them 10 days to trade or release him or place him on waivers. The right-hander is making $4.75 million this year.
Mujica, who turns 31 on Sunday, posted a 4.61 ERA in 13-2/3 innings over 11 appearances. He gave up 15 hits, including three home runs, and three walks, struck out only eight batters, and lost the faith of manager John Farrell, who recently began using him earlier in games and in lower-leverage situations.
