Rookie major-league and Red Sox manager Alex Cora shrugged off the team’s hot 9-1 opening as nothing more than a fast start, but those first 10 games were quite the feat. Only four brand-new managers have started off with a record as good as or better than Cora. One of them, Joe Morgan, took over the Red Sox in the middle of the 1988 season and authored what’s still referred to as “Morgan Magic.” One of the other two, Pat Moran, also has a New England connection — he was born in Fitchburg. New Mets manger Mickey Callaway has no known Red Sox connection, though he did throw six innings for the Angels at Fenway Park on Aug.
