Chris Sale will not pitch against his former team this weekend, but the Red Sox’ desire to give him extra rest has its limits.
For example, it does not apply when facing the Yankees.
Although manager John Farrell elected to give Sale an extra day off this week, he will skip someone else’s turn in the rotation next week so that Sale pitches on normal rest at Yankee Stadium in a game that could prove pivotal in determining the AL East.
“You look ahead, there’s three series against New York,” Farrell said. “Chris is mapped out to be in every one of them, (after pitching) Tuesday in Tampa.
