Red Sox Notebook: Dustin Pedroia’s knee presents puzzle for John Farrell

CINCINNATI — The Red Sox had a day off Thursday and expected Dustin Pedroia to be rested enough to play second base the first two days of this weekend series against the Reds. That plan changed when Pedroia’s left knee proved more sore than usual on Friday.

Pedroia was out of the lineup yesterday, and the Red Sox were left with a familiar balancing act between giving Pedroia down-the-stretch at-bats and keeping him healthy for a postseason run.

“The thing with Pedey,” manager John Farrell said, “what we have to kind of get a best plan of — and this will be with Pedey’s involvement — is how do we get him in the best position to be as fresh as possible provided we go to that next level?
