Drew Pomeranz is the Red Sox player to watch today.
His workload nearing a career high, Pomeranz’ shrinking velocity is only more reason for the Red Sox to try and rest their clear-cut No. 2 starter before the playoffs begin.
But entering last night’s game against the Houston Astros, the Sox still had Pomeranz’ name listed as their probable starter for this afternoon’s game. With the AL East still not wrapped up, manager John Farrell was hesitant to take Pomeranz off his normal routine and give him the day off.
If the division is wrapped up before today’s start, though, Farrell said there could be other plans.
