The Boston Red Sox didn't sign a first baseman at the trade deadline despite Abraham Toro's prolonged slump. The infielder is slashing .173/.229/.265 in his last 30 games and has minimal prior first base experience.
The Red Sox added another first base option late on August 17. Boston is finalizing a deal with Nathaniel Lowe, whom the Washington Nationals designated for assignment three days earlier, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN. The Red Sox's 40-man roster is full and they'll have to make a corresponding move to add Lowe to the roster. In the hours before the signing, Chris Cotillo of MassLive reported that the Red Sox would be among the teams pushing to sign him, and they worked quickly.
