Red Sox rookie Marcelo Mayer will be out indefinitely as he faces a familiar injury.
Boston placed the 22-year-old infielder on the 10-day injured list with a right wrist sprain ahead of Friday’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Fenway Park. Infielder David Hamilton was recalled from Triple-A Worcester as a corresponding move.
Mayer appeared to sustain the injury at some point during Wednesday’s game versus the Philadelphia Phillies. He was removed from the contest in the fifth inning due to right wrist discomfort.
Speaking with reporters Friday, Mayer explained he suffered no broken bones and that he isn’t yet sure of the severity of his sprain.
