Red Sox fall to Blue Jays 6-1, fail to secure playoff spot for now

TORONTO (AP) — Daulton Varsho hit his fifth career grand slam, George Springer added a two-run homer and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Boston Red Sox 6-1 on Thursday night to maintain a tie for the AL East lead with the New York Yankees.

Toronto (91-68), which had lost six of seven, closes with three games at home against Tampa Bay.

The Red Sox (87-72) were prevented from clinching a postseason berth. The Red Sox are in position for the second AL wild card, one game ahead of Detroit (86-73) and two games in front of Houston (85-74) with three games left.
