Red Sox claim catcher Bryan Holaday off waivers

LOS ANGELES -- The Boston Red Sox claimed catcher Bryan Holaday off waivers Friday, the day after 10-year veteran Ryan Hanigan was removed in the eighth inning of an extra-inning win against the Seattle Mariners after feeling "a popping sensation" in his left ankle while trying to block a pitch, manager John Farrell said.

Holaday was traveling to Southern California on Friday evening and was unavailable for the series opener against the Los Angeles Dodgers, leaving Sandy Leon as the only healthy catcher.
