Red Sox add 2B Esteban Quiroz out of Mexican League

The Red Sox have acquired some much-needed infield depth. Whether they’ve added a legitimate option to plug their hole at second base remains to be seen.

Mexican League second baseman Esteban Quiroz signed a minor league deal with an invitation to big league camp. The 25-year-old hit .293 with 11 home runs and a .428 on-base percentage in Mexico this summer, and he made a bit of a name for himself with two home runs during Team Mexico’s brief stint in the World Baseball Classic last spring.

Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski confirmed the signing, but stopped short of putting Quiroz near the top of the depth chart.
