No rush in search for new GM

Dave Dombrowski knew Ben Cherington might not take the offer to stay on, but he insisted on making it.

Now Dombrowski must search for a new general manager.

The man hired for the Red Sox’ new position of president of baseball operations, Dombrowski assumed all of Cherington’s decision-making power on Tuesday. Then he asked Cherington to stay and work under him. Cherington wasn’t interested.

“I understand why he came to the decision that he did,” Dombrowski said of Cherington. “But I have the utmost respect for him, and he’s left a lot of good parts to the organization and he’s going to help with the transition here.
