The date was July 1, 2011. Eduardo Nunez remembers only that it was the day he had four hits against the Mets.
Nunez was still a young kid back then, playing for the Yankees. Just a few weeks past his 24th birthday, he was getting his first extended opportunity in the big leagues. His family, visiting from the Dominican Republic, was waiting outside the Citi Field clubhouse.
Nunez showered, changed into his street clothes and planned to grab a quick dinner before heading out with his relatives. Alex Rodriguez stopped him.
“He told me, ‘Change and we’re going to go to the weight room,’ ” Nunez said.
