George Smith and the Impossible Dream (Part 1)

George Smith passed away in St Petersburg, Florida in 1987 at the age of 49. But in his last season in the majors in 1966 he was part of a preview of the Impossible Dream.

The Red Sox went into the final series before the All-Star break with a record of 33-52 and in last place in the American League. To the surprise of their fans, they swept the Chicago White Sox at home. It gave them a winning streak of 6 out of 7.

The Sox were a young and improving team at bat. The top hitters were Carl Yastrzemski, Rico Petrocelli, Tony Conigliaro, George Scott and Joe Foy, all in their 20’s.
