Dr. Arthur M. Pappas, the Red Sox medical director from 1978-2002, died Tuesday at the age of 84.

In addition to being the team doctor, the Auburn native also had a partial share of Red Sox ownership prior to the John Henry-led group taking over the club. Pappas was a charitable man who served on the board of trustees for the Massachusetts Hospital School for severely challenged children.

The impact Pappas made with the Red Sox may have been described no clearer than by Hall of Fame left fielder Carl Yastrzemski.

“Dr. Pappas was an excellent guy,” Yastrzemski said in statement.
