For Red Sox bench coach Gary DiSarcina, it’s always good to be home in Boston

Even as he interviewed for the job that would bring him back home, Gary DiSarcina wasn’t entirely sure what to say.

He’d grown up around Boston. He’d spent nearly 20 years in professional baseball. He’d been an All-Star shortstop, a Triple-A manager and a big league third base coach. Now, John Farrell was considering DiSarcina to be his right-hand man on the Red Sox bench, and it wasn’t entirely clear which line on the resume made him most qualified.

“I said this to John when he brought me on board and hired me,” DiSarcina said. “I said, it’s the most difficult job interview of my life because there is no defined (role).
