OAKLAND, Cal. -- Andrew Benintendi is getting a much-needed day off.
Just like John Farrell did with Jackie Bradley Jr. when Bradley was starting to slump, Farrell took Benintendi out of the lineup for Thursday’s season opener against the Oakland A’s and replaced him with Chris Young.
Benintendi was 0-for-4 with a sacrifice fly in the Sox’ 5-4 extra-innings win over the St. Louis Cardinals last night to extend his hitless streak to 25 consecutive at-bats.
The Red Sox manager said yesterday he wasn’t worried about Benintendi and planned to keep him in the four-hole. But Benintendi was due for a day off anyway, having played in 38 of the 39 games the Sox have played this year.
