An ACC-defining win gave the Eagles legitimacy within their new league.
Boston College's 2005 exit from the Big East left the Eagles without a red carpet bridging the divide between their old league and their new destination in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Northeast was angry at the breakup of their traditional footprint, and critics from the southern league were slow to accept a team with few ties to its member institutions. Traditionalists viewed a cold weather New England outsider as an institutional anomaly on a conference steeped in Southern gridiron culture, and a persistent narrative suggested that the Eagles were merely coat-tailing into a powerhouse league without thinking about the week-in or week-out physical toll of playing those powerhouses.
