Boston Bruins Draft Malcolm Subban

Oh man is Chiarelli trolling!

In the first round of the NHL Entry Draft on Friday night, the Bruins surprised everyone by selecting goalie Malcolm Subban 24th overall. And for those of you wondering, yes, Malcolm is indeed the younger brother of Montreal defenseman PK Subban. Subban was the highest rated North American goalie in this year's draft class and appears to have tremendous upside to him. Subban will attend Development Camp this coming week, but will likely be returned to the Belleville Bulls of the Ontario Hockey League, Subban's junior team.

What's really funny about this trade is the fact that Malcolm and PK are related, and the Bruins decided to pick up Malcolm. Of course it was for his talent, but let's have some fun and say that the team did this to mess with PK's head.

When asked about being drafted by the Bruins, Subban said, "The rivalry has begun. I don't think PK will like me too much, but I've never really liked him either." Too funny. I can feel the brotherly love coming from them.

I hope we get to see Malcolm rob PK of a goal and then slew foot him as he skates by the net.

In all seriousness though, Subban has very high upside and projects to be an elite #1 goalie in the NHL. He moves well in the crease, stays square to the shooter, stays big and sees the puck well through traffic (per The Fourth Period Magazine's Shawn Hutcheon). While he appears to still be about 2-4 years away from cracking the NHL roster, this adds to the Bruins goaltending depth that was depleted with the "departure" of Tim Thomas. The Bruins goaltending depth chart now is Tuukka Rask, Anton Khudobin, Michael Hutchinson, Nicklas Svedberg, and Malcolm Subban. You can expect the Bruins to sign a veteran goalie to either start or back up Michael Hutchinson in Providence this upcoming season.
