Ex-Boise State linebacker Joe Martarano sent back to Eugene

The Chicago Cubs sent former Boise State linebacker Joe Martarano back to the Eugene Emeralds of the short-season A Northwest League on Saturday.

The Fruitland native was promoted to Low-A South Bend a week earlier. But the 22-year-old first baseman/outfielder was 4-for-24 (.167) in his first week at the full-season level.

Martarano started the season in Eugene and hit .366 in 12 games. He left the Boise State football team in March to focus on his baseball career full time.

The Boise Hawks next host Eugene for a three-game series Aug. 8-10.
