Few teams in college football had shown they could score at the rate established this season by Middle Tennessee. Twice already, the Blue Raiders lit up scoreboards for at least 70 points. So the threat of Illinois losing its final nonconference home game of the season certainly was real Saturday afternoon, even after the Illini established a 12-point lead through three quarters.
The Illini had to sweat until the very end but managed to escape in a thriller.
