Illinois instability leads to a wishy-washy call on keeping Bill Cubit

Illinois’ decision to remove the interim tag and keep head coach Bill Cubit for two more seasons isn’t really much of a decision at all. It’s more like kicking the can down the road.

It’s a move based on instability. With no permanent athletic director in place and an interim chancellor running that process, the Illini were simply in no position to conduct a proper search for a new coach -- especially in an unusually overstuffed marketplace this winter.

That’s not to say that Cubit didn’t deserve a shot at making this a full-time gig. He does.
