Unique defensive traits spark Oklahoma State's push for playoff spot

One play early in the second quarter of Oklahoma State’s 49-29 victory over TCU last Saturday showed Mike Gundy’s vision becoming reality.

Trailing 21-9, TCU was driving deep into Cowboys’ territory looking to cut into Oklahoma State’s lead. A 10-yard sack by backup defensive end Jarrell Owens on first down helped slow the drive, forcing TCU to play from behind the chains. Three plays later, the Cowboys had the ball back, 21-9 lead intact, after TCU quarterback Trevone Boykin's fourth-down pass sailed out of the end zone.

Plays such as Owens’ sack became a common sight in the Cowboys’ signature win.
