NORMAN, Okla. -- It was a seminal sequence in the Bob and Mike Stoops era at Oklahoma.
To begin the third quarter last season against Baylor, the Sooners might as well have come out of the halftime locker room wielding a white flag. The Stoops Brothers had ordered their defensive backs play 10 yards off the ball, seemingly fearful of what might happen if they actually challenged Baylor’s mighty receiving corps.
The result was one of the easiest touchdown drives surrendered in Oklahoma’s proud history. Boos cascaded down from the Owen Field seats for the first time since John Blake had been the coach; Mike Stoops and captain Julian Wilson erupted at one another on the sidelines in a disheartening public spectacle.
