Participating in his first collegiate weigh-in as a freshman at Iowa State, safety Kamari Cotton-Moya was thrown aback when he met Joel Lanning, a bulky prospect who weighed in around 230 pounds.
“I was like, what do you play? Linebacker?” Cotton-Moya remembers.
Upon hearing Lanning was a quarterback -- then seeing him in action on the field -- Cotton-Moya became convinced his fellow 2013 recruiting class signee was the future at the position. It took two years for Lanning to secure the starting spot, but now he is the man behind center.
“I always thought he could play,” Cotton-Moya said.
