How Oklahoma State won its first national title 71 years later

Oklahoma State football’s first-ever national championship was won not by coaches or players in 1945, but by a couple of media-relations staffers in 2016.

The American Football Coaches Association announced Thursday it is retroactively awarding a national title to the school’s 1945 9-0 Oklahoma A&M Aggies team. This honor has been in the works for more than a year and was bestowed by a “Blue Ribbon Commission” of coaches tasked with choosing Coaches’ Trophy winners for the period from 1922-1949, prior to the first coaches’ poll.

The AFCA asked schools to nominate any teams which might be worthy of a national title.
