Why the Joey McGuire era almost didn't happen at Cedar Hill

In 14 years as head coach at Cedar Hill, Joey McGuire won 141 games and three state titles. It was an amazing run for the coach who on Wednesday officially joined the staff of Baylor's new football coach, Matt Rhule.

McGuire helped a school that had never won a football playoff game become a powerhouse. But he almost didn't make it to Cedar Hill.

Back in 1997, McGuire was an assistant at Crowley, his alma mater. He was happy there, but Cedar Hill's new coach, Robert Woods, wanted to interview him for an assistant position.

"I was going to stay in Crowley, but I interviewed out of respect for Coach Woods," McGuire said Thursday.
