SEC expects 'due diligence' on employing those with spotty pasts

DESTIN, Fla. -- When Greg Sankey became the SEC commissioner in the summer of 2015, he formed a working group that primarily dealt with compliance and governance.

The legislation that passed Friday at SEC spring meetings was a result of that group's efforts. The conference passed a bylaw that stated SEC schools shall exercise "best efforts" to evaluate new hires, amending a preview bylaw.

But the rule that previously mentioned coaches and assistants was expanded to support staff and also explicitly mentioned what the NCAA defines as "unethical conduct," a term broadly defined in the NCAA rule book.
