Baylor Hires Jim Grobe As Interim Head Coach

The Baylor Bears have found a temporary replacement for Art Briles. The school will hire former Wake Forest head coach Jim Grobe as interim head coach. The news was first reported by 247Sports.

Grobe takes over a program reeling from sexual assault allegations against former players. Baylor is accused of ignoring those allegations, and even covering them up. Briles was fired from Baylor as a result, leaving the Bears in need of a new head coach.

The rest of the Bears coaching staff will remain intact under Grobe. The move comes as a bit of a surprise, since defensive coordinator Phil Bennett was reportedly going to be the interim. According to ESPN, Grobe beat out Bennett and former Baylor player Mike Singletary for the interim job.

Grobe was the head coach at Ohio University from 1995 to 2000 and the head man at Wake Forest from 2001-13. The 64-year old has a career 110-115-1 record, including a 77-82 record at Wake. A defensive coach, Grobe's experience coaching at a private school like Wake likely helped him land the position. He did lead Wake Forest to an 11-3 record and an ACC title in 2006. He resigned in 2013 after his fifth straight losing season.
