Orioles observations on a strange record, offensive woes and Vance Worley's next step

One of the strangest major league records was set in the Orioles’ 7-1 loss to the New York Yankees on Tuesday night.

Yankees center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury reached on a catcher’s interference in the first inning when he hit Caleb Joseph’s mitt on his swing, marking the ninth time this season that Ellsbury has reached on a catcher’s interference.

Ellsbury hit a grounder to shortstop – his swing knocking Joseph’s mitt off – and was thrown out, but was awarded first base.

“There’s nothing illegal about it,” Orioles manager Buck Showalter said.
