Mattress pitching, Zoom calls and ‘unprecedented’ roster moves: How the Marlins returned from a COVID-19 outbreak

After the coronavirus blitzed through their clubhouse, the Miami Marlins came up with a nickname for the players left standing.

Marlins president of baseball operations Michael Hill unveiled the moniker on a Zoom call with reporters Tuesday about an hour before the team faced the Orioles at Camden Yards in its first game in more than a week.

“Trece” is Spanish for 13, the number of players the Marlins still had after 18 members of their roster tested positive for the virus and another player, second baseman Isan Diaz, elected to sit out the remainder of the season.
