MUNCIE — As each Yorktown track and field girl placed her hand on the Delta Sectional trophy in the team huddle, coach Jared Turner gave them a message that seemed to serve as a reminder and congratulate.
He praised them for pulling out first place in the standings after a neck-and-neck race with Jay County, but reminded them that they spent most of the day barely ahead of the Patriots. Heading into one of the final events, the 400 relay, Yorktown led by six points.
But his team won after a strong showing in the shot put, scoring 143.
