PORTLAND, Ind. — The Delta coaches galloped up and down the side of the pool at Jay County, throwing their arms up in triumph every time Hayden Armstrong made a turn.
Armstrong dominated the field in the 200-yard freestyle in Saturday's sectional, finishing in 1:59.77, which was about eight seconds faster than second place. She is just a freshman, but qualified for the state meet next weekend at the Natatorium.
When Armstrong touched the wall and finished with what is now a school record, she started to tear up. It was the second time she had cried Saturday.
