‘Right thing to do’: BSU reacts to winter athletes receiving another year of eligibility

MUNCIE, Ind. — As Ball State athletic director Beth Goetz reflected on the NCAA’s decision last week to provide winter athletes an additional year of eligibility, she wasn’t surprised.

There are the disruptions that have taken place with what was previously scheduled. There are the anticipated disruptions that have yet to arise, but very well could. There are the disruptions that have taken place with football teams across the country as they’ve attempted to have as complete a fall season as possible.

Sure, Goetz might not have guessed the decision would have been approved this early. Even BSU men’s basketball coach James Whitford thought, given it appears as if his team will have a season, that the decision was more complex for winter sports than it was for fall or spring sports because of that reality.
