Position primer: A step back in 2016, leaves IU wanting more from special teams

BLOOMINGTON – The last position preview of the preseason is the most all-encompassing.

Special teams was something of a mixed bag for Indiana in 2016. Griffin Oakes struggled with field goal accuracy, and so did Indiana with holding duties. Joseph Gedeon’s punt unit wasn’t dominant, but did well considering the Hoosiers averaged the second-most returns against per game in the Big Ten.

Mitchell Paige was sure-handed on Indiana’s punt fielding duties, and Devonte Williams quietly became one of the league’s best kick returners, his 784 yards led the conference.
