MUNCIE, Ind. — The state championship banners commemorating Muncie's glory days still hang, but that's about the only thing keeping one of the nation’s largest and most storied high school gyms from looking more like a construction site.
On Monday, The Star Press was granted access inside the Fieldhouse.
The wood playing floor has been completely removed to reveal the concrete base and adhesive material that was holding the floor in place. Some sections of the floor are stacked in the hallways, being saved for possible other uses; others were completely destroyed and thrown away.
Paint is badly chipping in the west lobby, bleachers in the west balcony are damaged, steel I-beams are bent in many places, giving way where strong winds last November led to the roof caving in.
