How Ball State's James Whitford makes a unique off-court situation work as a father and a coach

MUNCIE, Ind. — It’s a sunny June evening, and James Whitford is sprinting across the front lawn of his west-side Muncie home.

"Get him!"

His two sons, 10-year-old Liam and 8-year-old Spencer, have their baseball gloves on and toss a ball back and forth while Whitford desperately tries to avoid getting tagged.

"We’ve got a high-level game of pickle going on here," Whitford explains, a bit out of breath. The goal is to touch the two orange cones, set up about 50 feet apart, as many times as you can before being tagged out. Once you are tagged, then you put a glove on and the tagger becomes the runner.
