How a Muncie boxer escaped Chicago violence, reached Golden Gloves 2018 title match

MUNCIE, Ind. — David Spikes’ steady improvement just two years into his boxing career is based on the principle that you can’t get comfortable. He learned it in Chicago as he ran from trouble day after day, most of the time fearing for his life. There was always a surprise waiting for him, he learned.

After Spikes finished working at Taco Bell on a recent weeknight, he arrived at the Muncie Pal Club to train. A younger boxer remarked, "Man, I feel weak today." Without looking up from tying his shoes, Spikes quipped, "Well don’t let anyone else know it.
